Couldn’t help but write this

I don’t remember ever blogging about politics, even though I do read a lot of articles on Maldivian politics from various local websites. But the events which have taken place within the last couple of weeks (large number of Addu people resigning from MDP, two parties getting kicked out of the Ittihaad, Umar Naseer having a go at Dr. Hassan Saeed and now GoGo Latheef attacking Anni) which has left common people like me really frustrated.

If this goes on, more and more people would lose their confidence in the reformist parties and Maumoon Abdul Gayoom would easily get elected in the next Presidential elections.

It was a pleasant sight to see all the opposition party leaders seated together - or more importantly working together, when the Ittihaad was formed a few months back. It was “all for one”, everybody against the ruling DRP. Activities like the Uthuru and Dhekunu Arumaazu actually brought hope to the people that all the parties were working together to bring the much needed changes. But alas, just a few months later the picture has completely changed. Hope is fading away once again.

Personal hunger for power has divided opposition alliance. Who is any different from Gayoom now? Ibra wants to be president. Umar Naseer wants to be president. Anni wants to be president. There is nothing wrong with many people wanting to be president. But rather than fighting amongst each others, why not just let the people decide? Why not conduct a public poll to decide what the people want? Once the people have decided, then all the parties can get behind that candidate and beat Gayoom. Would that be so hard?

If it is at all about the people, about bringing changes to the country and NOT about personal hunger for power, show that to us. We still have a lot of time before the elections to decide who we’d be voting for. So far I would say it doesn’t look like any of the opposition leaders would be getting my vote. (Not even you, Gayoom.)

There. I said it. I had to get that off my chest.
